TVXQ's Yunho makes powerful comeback with 'ThankU'

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

TVXQ's Yunho has made his return for the year 2021 as he treats his fans with not one, but six beautiful tracks for his second mini-album titled “NOIR.”

On January 18, Monday, the K-pop idol officially released his full album along with the music video of its title track, “ThankU.”

In the 7-minute cinematic film, fans can see Yunho battle it out in a sort of mafia war as he takes his revenge against actor Hwang Jung-min.

According to the singer, “ThankU” is a pop dance track with dark themes and thrilling effects highly related to the noir movie genre.

The lyrics talk about Yunho thanking all the prices fame has to offer -- both good and bad.

He sings in one part of the track, “Thank you for diss / thank you for like / Thank you for me / Thank you for dislike me. / Finally the third lesson, /Don't fuss over the small things. You have to become stronger / so that you can laugh it off.”

During his VLive, Yunho shared that the track underwent many changes before coming up with the final version of the track.

“There were many nominees for the title track but not like this,” he said.

“We made many re-arrangements for the track, and I worked with many producers for this project. I think there are seven versions of this song before we came up with the final track.

“Similarly, there were also many variations of the dance. I personally think it will be great to see on stage, and you'll understand why once you see the performance.”

Yunho's second mini-album, “NOIR,” is based on the cinematic film genre characterized by a low-key, black-and-white visual style usually connected with crime fiction dramas.

The movie concept was taken to an even bigger stage by Yunho as he uses this to visualize every song from his “NOIR” album.

He said on his VLive, “There are six posters for every concept of the song, and it's used to describe my life if it was a movie. There's drama, comedy, romance, and sci-fi.

“I wanted to show this to my fans as much as possible.

“From the very beginning, I trained myself to become a part of TVXQ, and as I grew older, I received more love from fans. You've seen me become a more positive, more passionate person, and I wanted to convey that to you guys.”

The 35-year-old also stated that the songs from his new album reveal parts of himself unlike ever before, and he hopes that by conveying it in his lyrics, it would be great to see it manifested in small “movies.”

“I looked at my diary and made it into this album,” he explained.

“It's very similar to my life, and I like watching dramas and movies. So I thought it would be great to see my lyrics come to life visually too.”

Beginning January 8, Yunho has been sharing videos for all his tracks leading to “ThankU,” except for one -- “Eeny Meeny,” which will be released next week. Watch all the videos below:

When asked what the singer is thankful for with himself, he answered, “I think, the moment leading to right now.

“While preparing for this album, there were so many things that I felt and worked hard for -- both day in and day out.

“The staff and the producers really worked hard with me, and I think that's why I can say that I'm so thankful to myself for holding on and working hard on this album.”

Yunho's album “NOIR” is out now on all digital streaming sites.
